Dochfour salmon success
UP until Friday of last week the rods on the River Ness' Dochfour beat had successfully landed 14 salmon.
John Barder grassed an impressive eight, returning two of them. His best at 11lb came to a size 8 Ally's Shrimp at Berries Wall.

Melvin Smith took two at 7lb and 10lb on fly, both at the Weir.
Mr S Smith returned an 8lb salmon at Burnmouth as did Billy Orrock with a 12lb salmon he landed at Netting Water.
Jack Christenson tempted an 8lb salmon to a Black Shrimp at the Weir and ghillie Grant Sutherland returned a 7lb salmon that took a similar fly in Netting Water.

ON THE Laggan Douglas Chappel had their only fish up until Friday. At 9.25lb it was taken on a Silver Ally's Shrimp in the Island Pool.
Ness Castle produced ten, four being lost, for the MacKintosh party during the same period with the river at a perfect height.
Mark Bedini showed the way with six to his own rod.
On Monday he had two salmon of 11Ib and 11.5lb on a size 8 Ally's Shrimp in the Black Stream; on Tuesday he had one of 7.5lb in the Laggan Pool on a size 12 Stoat; on Thursday he took a brace at 8lb and 8.5lb on a size 10 Stoat from the Lady Pool and on Friday he had one of 8.5lb on the same fly in the Black Stream.
Andrew Jamieson took a fine brace at 6lb and 10lb on a size 8 Ally's in the Black Stream; Mark Stewart, again on a size 8 Ally's, caught an 8lb salmon in the same run and Ben MacKintosh grassed a fine 8lb sea-liced salmon on a 2.5 black/orange Devon and once again the Black Stream was the place to be.
There were sea-lice or signs of them on a couple of other salmon so there are still fresh fish entering the system.

ON NESS-SIDE eight made the net with one coming off just as it was about to be netted.
Five of the eight were sea-liced which is very encouraging for only the second week in September.
Tom Anderson consolidated his recent success there with another three under his belt, all of which were sea-liced.
Worthy of note is the fact that all of the salmon caught were on size 8 Ally's Shrimp flies which one exception which fancied a size 6 Ally's Shrimp.
Tom's fish at 10.5lb and 6.75lb were taken in the Holm Pool and one at 7.5lb from Cairn.
W J Campbell had a 10Ib salmon at Birch Tree; J Robertson one of 7.5lb in the Gauge as did G Binnian with one of 8.5lb which he returned as it was a bit coloured.
H Rutherford picked up a small grilse of 3.5lb also in the Gauge Pool.
I dropped in to see ghillie Scott MacKenzie on Friday evening and during the twenty minutes or so that I was there, we saw three or four salmon kicking through the Gauge Pool - encouraging.
On Inverness Angling Club beats, four were caught up until Tuesday of last week.
Jack MacKay had a fine brace of salmon at 7lb and 9lb on Saturday on a yellow Shrimp fly in the Mill Stream and Neil Fraser took one of 6lb on fly in the Little Isle.

Charlie Findlay lost a heavy fish, also in the Little Isle, with hooks straightening I believe.
On Tuesday, Donnie Urquhart landed a 6lb fish on Beat 1 of the Red Braes, that one on worm.

TARVIE Lochs again fished well last week and surface fished flies were still preferred.
Daddy Longlegs, Black Knat and small Sedges all doing well.
A 'Kate MacLaren', fished as a trailing bob fly, also worked wonders for those who were intent on fishing traditionally.
Some large rainbows were in evidence and George Skinner (Avoch) boated one of 7lb 3oz.
Bill Martin from (Inverinate) had the week's best at 7lb 14oz; Ian Campbell (Inverness) had another good rainbow of 6lb and Jim Patience (Avoch) one of 7lb 6.5oz.

WINNERS at the Geddes Fishery Monthly Open Competition were: 1; Tommy Hogg, Auldearn; 2; Murray Elliot, Inverness; 3; Kenin Dick, Nairn.
The heaviest fish went to Gordon Mackenzie, Inverness (5Ib 6oz) and the heaviest bag was 11Ib 4oz.
The next Open Competition will be on October 15.
The Beauly Angling Club produced a couple of salmon last week to Bob Crichton and Dave Sellers. Both fish scaled 6.5lb and both came to Shrimp patterns.

Some healthy sea-trout have been seen in the Firth and 'Yorkie' netted two crackers at 3lb and 4lb below Wester Lovat, so perhaps there is a late run on the move.

THE Averon is still in good trim and a few fish made the net over the last ten days or so.
Michael Munro released a salmon of 7lb which took a size 10 Ally's Shrimp under the wires on Beat 1. John McGow released a grilse of about 4.5lb which took a Badger tube fly and Sandy Esson landed a 7lb salmon in the Junction Pool (where the Blackwater joins the Averon at the top of Beat 1).
He also caught a grilse of 5.5lb a 7lb little further down at 'The Trees'.
