Dochfour salmon success
WITH only a couple of weeks left of the brown trout season, it closes on Friday October 6, Clach Club have won the Inverness and District Angling League for the Year 2000.
The order of merit was Clach Club, Portland B, Legion A, P 0 Letters and Thistle Tower.
On the final matches Clach Club, with 1lb 8.5oz, were pipped by Thistle Tower's 1lb 11.75oz on Loch Duntelchaig with D MacDonald's 1lb 1.5oz trout the best of the day.
    Legion A, with 1Ib 6oz, beat P O Letters' 1lb 1.5oz on Glascarnoch with W MacIntosh catching the day's best trout at 14.75oz.
Portland B blanked to Clach Club's 1lb 8.5oz on Loch Ness with J MacDonald catching the day's best at 11.5oz. On the last outing of the season, P 0 Letters and Thistle unfortunately both drew blanks on Loch Luichart.
The I.D.A.L. is holding an Open Pike Competition on Loch Arkaig on Saturday October 7.
Entry is £7 per head of which £1 will go to charity. To enter contact A Fraser on 01463 226259 or T Kay on 01463 233656.

A 'Fishery Operations and Angling Methods' National Certificate Module is being set up by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and is to be based at Ross House, Dornoch.
The course will cost a very realistic £48 and will require about 40 hours attendance.
It will be available on a flexible delivery basis with the study/theory section over the winter months with practical sessions during the spring months.
The course will be run under the supervision of the North Highland College (Thurso) with Tain-based Fraser Campbell (S.G.A.I.C., R.E.F.F.I.S., N.C.F) providing the instruction.
However, like everything else, it can only take off if sufficient interest is shown but it certainly seems like a step in the right direction by introducing this non-vocational course.
For admissions/information contact Ronnie Taylor on 01847 889233 or Fraser Campbell directly on 01862 839405.

THE rivers Garry and Oich at the top end of the Ness system produced 16 salmon between them as fresh water relocated salmon and stimulated activity.
On the River Oich 's Glendoe Beat Steve Hulme used a Red Flame to tempt fish of 5.5lb and 7.5lb from Canada and Kytra, the larger a coloured hen fish was released. Davie Brown took three from Canada on a Flying 'C' and Toby, those at 5, 5.5 and 6.5lb.
Mr A Dixon from Langholme returned one of 8lb that came to a Toby in Canada, keeping a 7.5lb salmon that took a Flying 'C' in the same pool.
On the Garry Mr Mezals returned one of about 9lbs which took a blue/silver Toby in the Estuary Beat.
The Hunter party accounted for eight with a fifty-fifty split of success between Loch Oich and the Estuary Beat.
All were in the 6-10Ib range and one badly seal marked salmon of 10.5Ib which took a silver Toby in the Loch was retained with the others being duly released. Flying Crystals, Salmo Tobys and Flying 'C's were favoured.
Around the 16th and 17th of the month the fishing hut at the Estuary Beat was forced open and the outboard motor stolen, so please take care not to leave equipment unattended and certainly not overnight.
We have all been warned often enough but it still happens.

On Loch Ness there wasn't much activity and a 3lb sea-trout caught by Alistair Fraser was all I've heard about. The loch was flat calm on Saturday, usually the day of most activity, but without that breeze it just won't fish properly.

On the River Ness catches were very much poorer than of late with the salmon seeming to having vanished.
They are there all right but just weren't showing or being particularly interested in anything that was cast over them.
On the Club water, Andy Massari caught the week's only fish, at 7.5lb it took a Devon minnow in the Maclntyre Pool. Shortly afterwards he lost a second in the same pool.

ON Ness-side seven went into the book since my last report on the 15th. Ian McGruer took one of 6lb on a 2" Silver Stoat Waddington in the Holm Pool on the Friday evening and on Saturday Mrs C Thomson had one of 6lb at Birch Tree on a 3" black/gold Devon.
Mr P Thomson took a fine 11Ib salmon on a Black Spoon in the Run and Ian Wetherspoon a 9lb sea-liced salmon in the HoIm Pool on a 3" black/gold Devon. Tom Anderson was back in action once again with a salmon of 8.25lb on a size 6 Black Shrimp in the HoIm Pool as did Mr J Johnstone with a 10.5lb salmon on a Toby.
Mr W McDiarmid finished off their week with a 7.5lb fish on a 2" black/orange Devon in the Gauge Pool.

ON Ness Castle three were caught and three lost with Mr Hart taking fish of 10lb and 7.5lb in the Black Stream, the latter being returned.
Mr Garson had one of 10.5Ib in the Lady Pool, all three were caught on size 8 Ally's Shrimps.

On the Laggan Beat four were landed with Graham MacKenzie taking a 9.5lb salmon from the Island Pool on a Silver Stoat and Simon Parry one of 8lb from Smith's Run on an Ally's Shrimp.
George Hayworth from Grantown on Spey returned two hen salmon of 7lb and 14lb which he caught at the Island Pool and the Green Bank, both fish came to a Purple Haze, a fly not commonly used in this part of the world.

DOCHFOUR added six to their Friday total of fourteen to finish week ending 16th with twenty.
John Hamilton released fish of 5.5lb and 7lb that took his fly at the Black Trees and Berries Wall on Friday evening.
Saturday saw Melvin Smith return one of 7lb in Culbuie and Neil Drummond one of 10Ibs that he contacted at the Weir.
Neil also took another at 5.5lb from the same spot; S Smith caught one of 8.5lbs at Burnmouth.
Last week saw another fifteen in the book with G Leca taking six to his own rod weighing between 7 and 11.5lb, all salmon in fact.
Melvin Smith grassed three with his best 13lb, two salmon of 7lbs each he returned, all having taken a MacLeod Shrimp.
John Barder, I Rankin, Steve Hulme had one apiece at 9.5, 11.5 and 6lb respectively. Keeping up the ladies side was Jean Armstrong with a fine 8lb salmon in Andrews.
The Dochfour Beat's best salmon to date, and as I recall the Ness system's, fell to Ted Murdoch's size 8 Red Ally's Shrimp at the Weir.
At 24lb, a salmon to remember.
