TARVIE Lochs have enjoyed another good month's sport with 'Drys', particularly Daddy Longlegs working well. Towards the end of the month sub surface flies of the Goldhead variety have worked well With a noticeable change in the water and the leaves on the trees starting to take on their autumn tints, surface fishing may well be drawing to a close. Some of last month's notable rainbow trout catches include: Colin Firth from Dunfermline 7lbs 1.5oz, Kevin Dick (Nairn) 7lbs 8oz;. Angus Craik (Evanton) 5lb 9oz; Colin Sutherland (Inverness) 7lb 4oz and 5lb 2oz, returning six on a visit there. Tom Redmond (Drumnadrochit) 4lb 12oz and 4lb 4oz returning seven on his visit. Kevin Greig (Inverness) 6lb 8oz; Andy MacIntosh (Kingussie) 7lb 3oz and 4lb 4oz; Charlie MacKinnon (Inverness) 6lb 14oz, returning eight fish on his visit and Bob Matheson (Lochend) one of 4lbs 10ozs. Brian Peach was out with his son B.J and together boated four rainbows for 15Ib 15oz, the best of those was caught by B.J. at 6lb 13oz. ON THE River Garry three more salmon went into the book with Mr Blyth taking an 8lb salmon from the Estuary Beat on a gold Toby and his brother Bob taking one of 8lb on a copper Toby.

SMALL numbers of fresh salmon were seen running the River Ness last week and it was a bit surprising that two of the five beats returned blanks. With the river running at a very reasonable height, one would have expected better results over all. On Ness-side eight were landed, four of which were sea-liced. The best of those at 12lb was caught by Kirk Lyon on a size 8 yellow Ally's in the Gauge Pool. Stewart Lyon and Alistair Macintosh had one apiece in the HoIm Pool at 7lb and 9lb on what else but 'Tosh' tube flies. As you probably know, Alistair was responsible for that fly pattern which carries his surname abbreviation. Robby MacAulay took one of 10.5lb from the HoIm Pool on a Toby and Colin Ashworth fish of 6.25 and 6.75lb on a Blair Spoon in the Run and Cairn. Donnie MacKay tempted a 5.5lb grilse to a copper Toby in the Gauge Pool and Jack Christenson a 9.5lb salmon to a 2.5" black/gold Devon in the HoIm Pool. Ness Castle rods accounted for six last week, two of which were sea-liced. There were fish showing on the beat but it was a rather dour week overall with a further two salmon being lost which adds to the general frustration. However, Mr and Mrs Bruce had one each, at 8lb and 5lb in the Black Stream. Dr Greig grassed a brace at 5.5lb and 7.5lb and on Saturday evening Ian MacLennnn (Flookie) grassed an identical brace also at 5.5lb and 7.5lb in the Black Stream. THE Dochfour anglers didn't have a particularly prolific week although the quality and condition of the fish was excellent with four being sea-liced of the eleven that made the net. |
THEY came to a 1" Willie Gunn tube fly in Victoria and a Temple Dog in Croik and Dukes. Dr Heather Watson had a sea-liced fish of 6lb in Garden on a half inch red/black tube fly and returned one of 5lbs which took a red/yellow tube fly in Otter's Corner.Alex MacKay had one of 5.75lb on a size 12 Stoat's Tail in Smigel and John Pennington returned a 4lb. grilse which came to a Temple Dog in Dukes. John Salkeld returned a clean run 7lb salmon which took a size 10 Munro Killer in Haivaig. With three of those fish actually being taken in September, their running total now sits at 254. With the river currently at plus 6" a couple of spates this month could well see the magic 300 being attained.
THE Helmsdale produced about sixty the week before last and about 40 last week.
THE River Nairn had a couple of short-lived small spates over the last week or so but there wasn't the normally expected buzz of activity.
THE Averon was in good trim towards the end of the week but all the activity would appear to have been on Beat 1, Burn's Water. Sandy Esson wormed a brace of 4.5lb and 5Ib.
